We have just had a possible disastrous event skirt by us in the form of Hurricane Hermine. Luckily where we are located in the Four Corners area we hopefully won't see the type of destruction and flooding that is ever present on the coastal areas during landfall. After 60 years in Miami I have seen some real destructive Hurricanes. From Donna to Andrew and then Wilma. We had to be prepared to be hunkered down in a home that could weather the storm.
Now I am living in the storm free(?) area of Central Florida. I know Charlie did cause a lot of damage in 2004. That goes to show homeowners here that Wind Mitigation is still an important factor for their home. Many homes in this area are Vacation Homes used for short term rentals. Most of those homes have no protection except for the double paned windows that are now so common up here. The second story of most of those homes, if not all, is constructed of frame stucco materials.
The State of Florida provides a very handy guide to Wind Mitigation. http://www.floridadisaster.org/mitigation/documents/wind%20mitigation%20booklet%20.pdf
I would suggest to new buyers that are concerned about their homes being able to survive a possible hurricane event to read the booklet and to secure their homes in the best way possible. I myself really enjoyed the invention of steel accordion shutters. Great protection and easy to operate. I even had them installed on my patio openings and covering my doors. Now they also make shutters that are clear shutters that are able to let light in, very important when the power goes off.
But it isn't only the windows that need to be secured. Garage doors and entryway doors have been known to be buckled in by strong winds. There are also measures that can be taken to secure them, especially from the inside. The pamphlet is well worth the time taken to read. It will help anyone prepare for a possible storm. It is also something that can be given out to a new home buyer.
Good luck to all and may the rest of the Season be quiet for us.

""To all those that need a Realtor, Jill Tebeau is by far the best! Recommend to me by Shalonda Dobey and I must say it was the BEST recommendation ever!!! Jill has been through this home buying journey with myself and my husband since we began and she was helpful throughout the entire process 😃. When I was upset, she was upset. What are you saying Patrice? I'm saying she's not just a Realtor, but she's a person that has your back 100%!!!! Thank you Jill for ALL of your time and effort through this process! We are well pleased!!""
